SPORTS BUSINESS CAN REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA

Sports could be a veritable goldmine for government and citizens of Nigeria if it was well developed and utilized. This was the consensus of participants at the Sports Summit organized by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo state Chapter on Wednesday, 30th November 2016. The participants said if sports is run properly it is capable of solving many social and economic problems including unemployment, thuggery and crimes. While faulting the sports administrative system in the country, the participants who are stakeholders called for probity and accountability on part of sports administrators stressing that this is the only way the sector would attract sponsors and investors. They further called for collaboration of stakeholders for development of sports in the country. Wikki Tourists, FC IfeanyiUbah to open 2016 NPFL Super4

Wikki Tourists and FC IfeanyiUbah have been drawn to play the opening game of the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which flags off on December 7 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. According to fixtures released by the League Management Company (LMC), the opening match will kick-off at 5pm with the second fixture between League champions, Rangers International and runners-up, Rivers United starting at 7pm. Abubakar said “on Match Day 2, Rangers International will play Wikki Tourists in the first match starting at 5pm while Rivers United and FC IfeanyiUbah will take to the pitch for the second game of the day”. The final match day will have the fixtures between Rivers United and Wikki Tourists at 5pm while FC IfeanyiUbah and Rangers International will play the closing game at 7pm. SHOOTING STARS TO CAMP AT ILARO AHEAD NEW SEASON

The management of the Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC, has picked Ilaro in Ogun State as camping site for the team in preparations for the new football season. This is perhaps informed by the array of club sides already having their training sessions in Ijebu Ode, the regular habitat of the Oluyole Warriors in the last five football seasons. According to 3SC media officer, Jubril Arowolo the contingent of 35 players and seven officials on Tuesday moved to the venue to start training on Wednedday morning. Out of the players are 17 old players and 18 possible new signings with five from Team B of the club. In his reaction, the club's Technical Adviser, Fatai Amoo says the first two phases of the screening have been successful going by the calibre of players who made the cut. BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL CLUB PLANE CRASHED

A plane carrying 81 people, including a Brazilian football team, has crashed on its approach to the city of Medellin in Colombia, officials say.* Details are unclear but some reports say there are survivors. The chartered plane, flying from Bolivia, was carrying members of the Chapecoense football team, airport officials said. The team was due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Medellin team Atletico Nacional. The first leg of the final of the cup, South America's second most important club competition, was scheduled for Wednesday, but has now been suspended. The team, from the city of Chapeco, was promoted to Brazil's first division in 2014 and reached the final last week after a victory against Argentina's San Lorenzo. Reports say the plane, carrying 72 passengers and nine crew, crashed in a mountainous area outside the city shortly before midnight local time (05:00 GMT). CHAMPIONS RANGERS TO EMBARK ON WEST AFRICAN TOUR

Champions Enugu Rangers are to tour some West African countries ahead of the new Nigeria league season and next year’s CAF Champions League. Rangers coach Imama Amapakabo said the club plan to visit Mali and Cote d’Ivoire to prepare for the new season. “We are going on a training tour of some west coast countries and soon the date for the team’s departure will be announced,” he said. The coach said he is happy with the healthy competition in the team’s pre-season training camp in Benin City. “The boys are adapting to the training and I strongly believe in competition as I foreseen serious competition among the players as the new players are ready to give the old players a fight for shirt,” he reported. “The new players will be announced as soon as possible after we have finalised their clearance. “I can also tell you that we have two foreigners again who has joined up with us in the camp in Benin. The League Management Company (LMC) has informed that there are plans to have more Friday Night matches during the 2016/17 football season. Shehu Dikko the 2nd Vice-President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) state said in an interview posted on Social media video channel, YouTube. “We plan to have more matches for Friday night in the upcoming season with a view of attracting more fans to our various Nigeria Premier League matches venues. “We would have noticed that the English Premier League (EPL) now have Friday Night matches in their fixtures. “I wouldn’t want to use the word copy, like some would say as least the NPL started before them and it has improved our league greatly. “The long term gains of the plan would see Nigerian fans watch their favorite teams, Rangers, Pillars, Rivers United, Shooting Stars, Ifeanyi Ubah and the other teams in action as from Friday to Sunday.
